It falls under the jurisdiction of Kisoro District and is situated in the transition zone between Lake Victoria and the Rwenzori Mountains, with an average altitude of about 1,200 meters above sea level and a savannah climate.

Economic and demographic characteristics

Molitaire's economy is predominantly agricultural, growing coffee, bananas and beans, and has a vibrant small-scale cross-border trade due to its proximity to the border. According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), the town has a population of about 30,000, with the Bantu-speaking Bakonjo ethnic group as the main inhabitants, most of whom are engaged in subsistence farming or small-scale commercial activities.

Transportation and Infrastructure

The town is connected to the major cities of Kabale and Kisoro via the A809 road and is about 80 kilometers from Rukungiri Airport. Infrastructure is relatively simple, with a basic health center and public elementary school, and electricity coverage is gradually being expanded. Cultural practices such as traditional dances and handicrafts are maintained.

Tourism and ecological resources

There are a number of tea and coffee plantations around Molitaar, offering an agricultural experience. A two-hour drive west leads to the impenetrable national park of Bwindi, an important habitat for the endangered mountain gorillas, which attracts eco-tourists on a stopover.
