Zhaodong is located in the southwestern part of China's Heilongjiang Province, under the jurisdiction of Suihua City, and is situated in the hinterland of the Songnen Plain, making it an important node city of the Harbin metropolitan area. The city has a total area of about 4,300 square kilometers and a population of about 900,000, mainly Han Chinese, with a relatively developed agricultural and industrial economy. Zhaodong has convenient transportation, with the Harbin-Dalian High Speed Railway, the Binzhou Railway and the G10 Suiman Expressway running through the city, and is only 50 kilometers from downtown Harbin.

Local specialties such as Zhaodong small cakes, corn and soybeans are well known. Tourism resources include natural and cultural attractions such as the ruins of Bali Castle and the Zhaodong Wetland Nature Reserve.
