Located on the eastern coast of China, on the south wing of the Yangtze River at the mouth of the sea, on the east bank of the Huangpu River, and across the river from the Bund in Puxi, Shanghai Pudong was developed and opened up by the Chinese government in April 1990, transforming this former farming and fishing village into a modern urban area. As the core carrying area of Shanghai's international financial, trade, shipping and technological innovation center, Pudong is situated in the Lujiazui Financial City, where national factor markets such as the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shanghai Futures Exchange converge, and the skyline is outlined by landmarks such as the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai Center and the World Financial Center. In addition, Pudong New Area is the location of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, which continues to deepen institutional innovation, attracting more than 30,000 foreign-funded enterprises from all over the world, and is an important window to observe China's high-level opening up to the outside world. Nowadays, with 1/8000 of the country's land, Pudong generates more than 1/50 of its GDP, epitomizing China's economic vitality and innovation capacity.
