Located on the northern coast of Cape Verde's second largest island, Santo Antão, Tarrafal is the island's capital and main port city. Backed by lush volcanic mountains and facing the Atlantic Ocean, the city is known for its distinctive black and white sandy beaches, colonial architecture and vibrant cultural scene.
Tarafal is situated in a natural bay formed by volcanoes and surrounded by steep hills. Near the city are the famous black sandy beaches of Praia da Luz and white sandy beaches of Praia Grande, creating a rare natural contrast. The area is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts, with access to the Topo de Coroa volcano, the highest peak in Cape Verde.
As an important port during the Portuguese colonial period, Tarrafal retains many colonial-style buildings such as the town square and the church of Santo Antão. The economy is based on fishing, agriculture and tourism, with local production of bananas, sugar cane and other crops. The Tarrafal Music Festival is an important cultural event in the West African region, showcasing Cape Verde's unique Morne music tradition.
Visitors can reach Tarrafal Airport by flight from Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, or from the island of Sal. The city has excellent port facilities and offers ferry services to other islands. Major attractions include the viewpoint of Tarrafal Bay, traditional markets and hiking trails to surrounding waterfalls, making it an ideal base for exploring the nature and culture of Santo Antão Island.
