Masjid Suleiman is a historic industrial city in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran, known as the "cradle of Iran's oil industry", where the discovery of Iran's first large-scale commercial oil field at the beginning of the 20th century ushered in the country's history of modern oil exploration and remains one of the central hubs of Iran's oil and gas industry. Located in the southern foothills of the Zagros Mountains, the city has a hot and dry climate, a predominantly Persian and Arab population, and an economy that is highly dependent on the energy industry, with refineries, natural gas processing facilities, and related industries. Despite its distinctive industrial character, the area still retains the imprint of traditional Persian culture, with sites such as the Oil Museum bearing witness to the development of Iran's energy industry and serving as an important window into the country's recent industrial history.
