Malden, Netherlands: medieval fortified town
Maarssen is a historic town in the Dutch province of Utrecht, located about 20 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam, next to the river Fecht. Its name probably derives from the Old Dutch word for "marshland", reflecting the geography of the area.
History and architectural features
Maldon's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when it was an important trading and defense post. The town retains a large number of 17th-18th century canal houses and manor houses, such as Hejzumelen Castle, which show the architectural style of the Dutch Golden Age. The masonry buildings and bridges along the canals in the old town form a typical Dutch waterfront landscape.
