Atakpamé, the capital of Togo's Région des Plateaux, is located in the south-central part of the country, about 160 kilometers from the capital, Lomé. As the fifth largest city in Togo, Atakpamé is an important agricultural and trade center, known for its cocoa, coffee and cotton cultivation.
The city is situated on a plateau about 400 meters above sea level and has a mild and humid climate. The population of about 80,000 is predominantly Ewe and Yoruba, and the local language is Ewe, with French as the official language. The layout of the city is based on a central market with a number of commercial streets radiating from it.
Atapame is the main transportation hub in the interior of Togo, where the railroad and the national highway connecting Lomé with the cities in the north meet. The economy is based on agro-processing, with cotton mills and palm oil processing plants. The traditional weekly market is an important distribution center for goods in West Africa.
The city retains remnants of German colonial architecture such as the old train station and churches. Surrounded by traditional villages and waterfalls, the annual Yoruba festival attracts many visitors. The nearby Mont Fazio is a popular destination for hikers.
