Sennar is an important historical city in the Republic of Sudan, located on the banks of the Blue Nile River and the capital of Sennar State. The city was once the capital of the historic Sultanate of Sennar (also known as the Sultanate of Fingi, c. 1504-1821), and was an important center of Islamic culture and trade in Africa from the 16th to 19th centuries, connecting the Arab world with the African interior.
Sennar is strategically located in southeastern Sudan, on both sides of the Blue Nile. It has a hot climate and a predominantly agricultural economy, which benefits from the famous Sennar Dam irrigation system, and is an important cotton, groundnut and cereal producing area in Sudan. The city's population is diverse, predominantly of Arab origin, and Arabic is commonly spoken.
Sennar has a rich historical heritage, with the remains of buildings and mosques from its heyday reflecting a unique Islamic-African fusion. Although many of the ancient buildings have been destroyed, it remains symbolically important as the nucleus of the first Islamic kingdom in Sudanese history. Modern Sennar is a regional administrative and commercial hub.
Today, Sennar continues to play a role as an agricultural and economic center, while attracting researchers and tourists because of its historical status. The city is connected to the capital Khartoum and beyond by rail and road, and is one of the starting points for exploring the history and culture of southeastern Sudan.
