Founded in 1638, it was once a trading post during the Dutch colonial period, and retains a wealth of colonial architecture and industrial relics, such as the former site of a 19th century textile mill. The economy of the town is mainly based on agriculture and manufacturing, but in recent years, it has gradually developed the leisure and tourism industry based on the geographical advantage of its proximity to the coast. With a population of about 8,000, the town has a peaceful community atmosphere and a blend of natural landscape and human history, making it suitable for residents and tourists looking for a slower life.
