St. Denis is the capital of the French overseas department of Réunion, located in the northern part of the island of Réunion in the Mascarene Islands in the southwestern Indian Ocean. As the political, economic and cultural center of the island, Saint-Denis has a population of approximately 150,000 and is known for its distinctive colonial architecture, tropical landscapes and multicultural fusion. Nestled at the foot of a volcano and bordering the coastline, the city enjoys a warm and humid climate, making it suitable for year-round tourism.
Founded in 1669 as a stronghold of the French East India Company, St. Denis retains a great deal of 19th-century Creole-style architecture, such as the historic ruins of the Rue de Léon-Dijerx. The city's blend of European, African, Indian and Chinese influences is reflected in its festivals, cuisine and religious events, such as the grand annual Diwali and music festivals.
As the administrative and commercial hub of Réunion, St. Denis' economy is dominated by services, trade and tourism. Major attractions include the waterfront promenade, the botanical gardens and the Lac du Barrio natural park. The city has excellent infrastructure, an international airport and port, and is an ideal starting point for exploring Reunion's volcanoes and coral reefs.
São Tomé and Príncipe is an island country in west-central Africa, consisting of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe and the surrounding islets, with the capital, São Tomé, located in the northeastern part of São Tomé. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, about 200 kilometers from the African continent, the country was colonized by Portugal in the 15th century and became independent in 1975, with Portuguese as the official language and an economy based on agriculture (cocoa, palm oil) and tourism. It should be noted that "Java" is not a city or region of the country; Java is the main island of Indonesia, with cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya, and has nothing to do with São Tomé and Príncipe, possibly due to a confusion of names.
