Rinbung County is located in the eastern part of Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region of China, in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River valley, with an average elevation of about 3,950 meters above sea level. It means "Treasure Bowl" in Tibetan, and is named after the richness of local resources. The county has a total area of 2122 square kilometers, population of about 30,000, mainly Tibetan.
