Kalkin, Afghanistan

Kalkin is a small city in Badakhshan Province in northeastern Afghanistan, located in the hinterland of the Hindu Kush Mountains, near the border with Tajikistan, and is one of the major settlements in the remote mountainous areas of the region. The city has a high altitude and a cold climate, and its inhabitants are predominantly Tajiks who are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry and traditional handicrafts, such as carpet weaving.
