Monrovia, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Liberia, is located on the Atlantic coast of West Africa at Cape Mesurado and is the political, economic and cultural center of the country. Founded in 1822 by American colonists and named after James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, the city was once one of the major settlements for African Americans. As home to the Port of Monrovia, it is Liberia's most important maritime hub and is responsible for much of the country's import and export trade, mainly exporting rubber, diamonds, palm oil and other materials. The city blends African traditions with European and American colonial culture, and its iconic Freeport, National Museum, and waterfront promenade showcase its diverse appeal. Despite its infrastructural challenges, Monrovia remains an important regional city in West Africa and carries Liberia's historical memory and hopes for development.
São Tomé and Príncipe is an island country in west-central Africa, consisting of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe and the surrounding islets, with the capital, São Tomé, located in the northeastern part of São Tomé. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, about 200 kilometers from the African continent, the country was colonized by Portugal in the 15th century and became independent in 1975, with Portuguese as the official language and an economy based on agriculture (cocoa, palm oil) and tourism. It should be noted that "Java" is not a city or region of the country; Java is the main island of Indonesia, with cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya, and has nothing to do with São Tomé and Príncipe, possibly due to a confusion of names.
