Macheta is a small town in the Cundinamarca Department of Colombia, located about 100 kilometers north of the capital city of Bogotá, in the mountainous valley of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes, at an average altitude of about 2,300 meters, with a mild and pleasant climate. The region has a predominantly agrarian economy, mainly growing alpine crops such as potatoes, corn, and barley, with a certain proportion of animal husbandry as well. Marchetta retains a traditional Colombian rural culture, with local residents engaged in handicrafts such as wool weaving and pottery, and an annual "potato festival" that attracts tourists from around the region.
