Svalbard and Jan Mayen are Norwegian Overseas Territories, of which the city of Langjør is located on Spitsbergen, the main island of Svalbard, and is one of the largest settlements in the Arctic Circle and the world's most northerly formal city. Located at 78 degrees north latitude, it is home to the unique phenomenon of the polar day and night, and was once a globally important coal-mining site, now transformed into a research and tourist destination. The city is home to the Global Seed Vault, known as the "breadbasket of doom", which stores samples of crop seeds from around the world.
