São Tomé and Príncipe is an island country in west-central Africa, consisting of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe and the surrounding islets, with the capital, São Tomé, located in the northeastern part of São Tomé. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, about 200 kilometers from the African continent, the country was colonized by Portugal in the 15th century and became independent in 1975, with Portuguese as the official language and an economy based on agriculture (cocoa, palm oil) and tourism. It should be noted that "Java" is not a city or region of the country; Java is the main island of Indonesia, with cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya, and has nothing to do with São Tomé and Príncipe, possibly due to a confusion of names.
Makariev is a historic city in Kostroma Oblast, Russia, located on the banks of the Vinzha River, about 180 kilometers from Kostroma, the capital of the oblast. The city takes its name from the 15th century St. Makariev Monastery, which was once an important center of the Russian Orthodox Church. Famous for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, Makariev is an ideal destination for exploring the history and religious architecture of the Russian countryside.
Makariev's history dates back to the Middle Ages and the St. Makariev Monastery, the city's central landmark, was built in 1444 and attracts many pilgrims and tourists. The city also retains its traditional wooden buildings and old churches, reflecting the unique artistic style of Russia's northern regions. Local cultural festivals, such as Orthodox festivals and exhibitions of folk handicrafts, are held annually, demonstrating the depth of national traditions.
Makariev's economy is based on agriculture, forestry and small-scale manufacturing, while tourism is gradually developing. Tourists can visit the ruins of monasteries, nature reserves and landscapes along the Vinzha River, and experience outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing. The city is easily accessible by road and connected to Kostroma for travelers who prefer a peaceful countryside tour.
