About Jakiri, Cameroon

Jakiri is a town in the Northwest Province of Cameroon, located about 20 kilometers north of the city of Bamenda, in the transition zone between the Bamoun Plateau and the Mban Plateau, surrounded by hills and savannahs, with a mild and humid climate. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy in this region, which produces coffee, cocoa, corn, bananas and other crops, and is one of the important distribution centers for agricultural products in Cameroon. Djakiri is a multi-ethnic area, with major ethnic groups such as the Bamoun and Mbimu. The local culture retains a traditional chieftaincy system, and traditional dances and handicrafts (e.g., wood carving and weaving) are quite distinctive. Despite the challenge of relatively weak infrastructure, Djakiri plays an important role in regional development and is one of the windows into the rural culture of northwestern Cameroon, thanks to its unique geographical location and rich cultural heritage.
