The county covers an area of 1,327 square kilometers and has a population of about 140,000 people. The county is named after the unique curved channel of the Yellow River, and is known as the "Cocking Three Provinces".
Hequ has a long history of human activities as early as the Neolithic Age, and is one of the important birthplaces of the Yellow River civilization. It is the birthplace of the Shanxi folk song "Hequ Folk Song" and the national intangible cultural heritage "Hequ Er Ren Tai", and is known as the "Hometown of Chinese Folk Art". There is the Yellow River Serpentine National Geopark in the county, which shows the geological wonders of the Yellow River channel change and has important ecological protection and scientific research value.
