Erdenet is the second largest city in Mongolia, located in the country's Northern Central Province, approximately 331 kilometers from the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. A major industrial center of Mongolia, Erdenet is known for its world-class copper and molybdenum mine, which is operated by a joint venture between Mongolia and Russia and is one of the mainstays of the Mongolian economy. Founded in the 1970s, the city has a population of around 100,000 and is one of the more modern cities in Mongolia with a relatively good infrastructure of schools, hospitals and cultural facilities. Located in the transition zone between steppe and forest, Erdenet is surrounded by a unique natural landscape, but its economy is highly dependent on mining and has been exploring industrial diversification in recent years.
Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, is located on the country's central plateau at an altitude of about 2,350 meters and has a pleasant climate that has been described as the "Italy of Africa". The city is a blend of Italian colonial architecture and local culture, with a large number of well-preserved modernist buildings, including futuristic churches, Art Deco theaters, and colorful homes. An example of early 20th century urban planning, its historic center was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Asmara is not only a political and economic hub, but is also known for its unique cultural scene and laid-back pace of life, and is a window to explore Eritrea's history and diverse civilizations.
