Donetsk is the capital of Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine, located in the heart of the Donbass region, historically known as the "Heart of Donbass", and is an important industrial center in Ukraine, particularly known for its coal, steel and machinery manufacturing, which emerged in the late 19th century as a result of coal mining, and in the 20th century developed into an important industrial city during the Soviet period. The Donetsk region, which became a focus of conflict following the change in the situation in Ukraine in 2014, is now under the control of the de facto authorities, but is generally recognized by the international community as part of Ukrainian territory.
