The township covers an area of about 42 square kilometers and has a population of about 23,000, with a predominantly southern Fujianese population. The name of the township originated from "Nine Block Alley" Zhuang in the Qing Dynasty, and was renamed Jiuru Township in 1946.

Jiuru Township has flat terrain and abundant water resources, and its main agricultural products include lemons, bananas, lotus flowers, and other cash crops, with lemon production ranking among the highest in Taiwan, earning it the reputation as the "Township of Lemons".
