Albuquerque is located in the central part of the U.S. state of New Mexico and is the state's largest city and the county seat of Bernalillo County. Nestled in the Rio Grande Valley at an elevation of about 1,619 meters above sea level, Albuquerque has a high desert climate and is known for its sunny, dry weather and magnificent backdrop of the Sandia Mountains.
Founded in 1706, the city is a blend of Spanish colonial culture, Native American traditions and modern American elements. Famous landmarks include the Sandia Peak Gondola (one of the longest in the world), the adobe buildings of Old Town, and the International Balloon Fiesta (the world's largest hot air ballooning event).
