Zepu County is located in the southwestern part of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR), belonging to the Kashgar region and situated on the western edge of the Tarim Basin. The county has a total area of about 999 square kilometers and a population of about 200,000, mainly Uyghurs and Han Chinese. Zephyr is named after the Persian word "Zelpushan", meaning "River of Gold", and is named after the Zephyr River, a tributary of the Yarkant River.
Zephyr is an important agricultural county in South Xinjiang, famous for cotton, jujube, walnut and other agricultural products, known as the "township of jujube".
