Located in the northern part of Shanxi Province, China, Yuanping City is part of Xinzhou City and is situated in the transition zone between Taiyuan Basin and Datong Basin, with a total area of about 2,570 square kilometers. As an important energy and agricultural base in Shanxi, Yuanping is known for its coal industry, as well as its abundance of crops such as corn and millet. The area has a long history, being the fiefdom of Yuanxiao, a great physician of the state of Jin during the Spring and Autumn Period, and boasts cultural attractions such as Tianya Mountain and Shigu Temple, as well as unique folk traditions such as Feng Yangge. With convenient transportation, the Tongpu Railway and Dayun Expressway running through the whole area, and about 100 kilometers away from Taiyuan City, Yuanping is one of the economic and cultural hubs in northern Jin.
