Cocos Island is not an independent country, but a remote island in the Pacific Ocean of Costa Rica, located about 550 kilometers southwest of the country. Known for its unique natural ecology and world-class diving, the island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The island is covered in dense tropical rainforest and is home to numerous endemic species such as the Cocos Island Thrush and a wide range of rare plants. The surrounding waters are a diver's paradise due to the abundance of marine life - including sharks, rays and dolphins. Cocos Island is uninhabited, with only scientific research and licensed tourism allowed, strictly protecting its pristine environment.
