Umm Bab, a town in western Qatar, is known as the "Gateway to the Desert", so called because of its location at the important border crossing between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Located on the western coast of the Qatar Peninsula, next to a vast desert area, it is uniquely situated to serve as a transportation hub connecting Qatar with other countries. The town is surrounded by a predominantly desert landscape, but in recent years, as Qatar has developed industrially, Umm al-Bab has gradually become an important industrial area, with cement factories and other industrial enterprises located in the vicinity. Despite its small size, Umm al-Bab has played an important role in the development of western Qatar due to its strategic location and industrial character, and is a window into the diverse face of Qatar.
