Famous for its rich uranium deposits, the city was founded in the 20th century during the Soviet era and now has a population of about 30,000 people. The climate is arid with little rain, hot summers and cold winters, and the economy is based on mining and related industries. Although an emerging city, its unique desert landscape and industrial character make it an important stronghold in the interior of Uzbekistan.
