Its economy is centered on energy and water management, with the reservoir supporting irrigated agriculture and fishing in the surrounding area.

Zimlyansk's economy is dependent on the hydroelectric power station and water facilities, and in recent years it has gradually developed recreational fishing and short-haul tourism. The area retains Soviet-era architecture, has a museum on the history of the hydroelectric power plant, and hosts an annual fishing culture festival reflecting the influence of the Don River Cossack tradition.
