Tarawa, Kiribati is the capital of the Pacific island nation of Kiribati, located in the Tarawa Atoll near the equator, consisting of several small islands, and is the political, economic and cultural center of the country. The city is low-lying, with an average elevation of less than 2 meters above sea level, and faces the serious challenge of rising sea levels. Tarawa has a population of about 50,000, nearly half of the country's total population, and its main industries include fishing, copra processing and tourism. As one of the first cities in the world to welcome a new sunrise, Tarawa's unique location and natural beauty attracts tourists, while at the same time attracting international attention for climate change issues.
