Sunan Yugu Autonomous County is located in the south of Zhangye City, Gansu Province, China, at the northern foot of Qilian Mountains, and is the only Yugu Autonomous County in China. With a total area of 23,800 square kilometers and an average altitude of about 3,000 meters, it has an alpine semi-arid climate. It is an important ecological barrier and water conservation area in the Hexi Corridor, with diverse landscapes such as grasslands, snow-capped mountains and glaciers.
The Yugu culture is the core feature of Sunan, preserving unique language, costumes and folk activities, such as the national non-legacy program "Yugu Folk Song". The economy is dominated by animal husbandry, which produces high-quality alpine fine-wool sheep, as well as the development of eco-tourism and clean energy industries. There are historical and cultural relics such as Horseshoe Temple and Wenshu Temple, as well as important sections of Qilian Mountain National Nature Reserve.
As the core area of the Qilian Mountain ecological security barrier, Sunan has the closest glacier to the city in Asia, the Qiyi Glacier. With the beautiful grassland scenery in summer and magnificent snow-capped mountains in winter, it is an ideal destination for ecotourism, ethnic experience and photography. The locality focuses on ecological protection and sustainable development, and is actively building a national ecological civilization demonstration county.
