The Yugu culture is the core feature of Sunan, preserving unique language, costumes and folk activities, such as the national non-legacy program "Yugu Folk Song". The economy is dominated by animal husbandry, which produces high-quality alpine fine-wool sheep, as well as the development of eco-tourism and clean energy industries. There are historical and cultural relics such as Horseshoe Temple and Wenshu Temple, as well as important sections of Qilian Mountain National Nature Reserve.
As the core area of the Qilian Mountain ecological security barrier, Sunan has the closest glacier to the city in Asia, the Qiyi Glacier. The locality focuses on ecological protection and sustainable development, and is actively building a national ecological civilization demonstration county.
