Arauca is a department in eastern Colombia, located in the northern part of the plains of the Orinoco River, bordering Venezuela, with the capital city of Puerto Arauca. It has a flat terrain and a remarkable savannah climate, and the Orinoco River and its tributaries nourish the vast land, which is rich in biodiversity. The economy is based on animal husbandry, petroleum agriculture and rice cultivation, making it an important granary and energy-producing region for Colombia.
