Silistra is an important city in northeastern Bulgaria, located on the southern bank of the Danube River, across the river from Romania. As the capital of the Silistra region, the city has a long history and a strategic geographical location.
The history of Silistra dates back to the Roman period, when it was an important military fortress. The city retains the ruins of its Roman walls and medieval fortresses, the most famous of which is the Roman Mausoleum built in the 4th century, which is on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List.
