Shengang District - A Cultural and Industrial Town in Taichung City

Located in the center of Taichung City, Taiwan, at the junction of the foothills of the Dawu Mountain and the alluvial plain of the Dajia River, Shengang District has been known as the "Barn of Central Taiwan" because of the richness of its soil and water, which made it an important area for the Han Chinese to migrate to for cultivation in the early days. The area is famous for its traditional crafts, especially the rattan weaving and bamboo crafts of the Liuliao community, which used to be an important production area for handicrafts in Taiwan, and still retains its traditional craft workshops. The confectionary industry in Kamioka is flourishing, and specialty snacks such as mochi and pineapple cake are popular, with unique flavors developed by combining local ingredients. In addition, Shengang has a rich human history, with monuments such as the Chang Tien-Shi Mansion in Old Zhuang and the Old Street in Zunjie, which show the development of the settlement since the Qing Dynasty, making it an important base for experiencing the cultural and agricultural history of central Taichung.

Guésséme, Niger: an oasis town on the southern edge of the Sahara

Guésséme is a small town in the Agadez region of northern Niger, situated on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert in a traditional trade corridor along Niger's borders with Algeria and Mali. As a typical oasis settlement, the climate here is arid and hot, with little precipitation, and it relies on groundwater and limited surface water to sustain agriculture and livelihoods, mainly planting drought-resistant crops such as dates and sorghum, and raising livestock such as camels and goats, which is characteristic of a nomadic culture. Although the town is small, it is an important material distribution center for the neighboring Tuareg and other nomadic tribes, with an active trade in traditional leather products and handicrafts, and at the same time retains a unique desert nomadic folklore and music culture, which is one of the windows for exploring the humanities and nature on the edge of the Sahara in the northern part of Niger.
