Kaedi, Mauritania

Kaédi is an important city in southwestern Mauritania, located on the banks of the Senegal River, and is part of the province of Terrazza, which is the administrative and economic center of the region. The city, due to its proximity to the Senegal River, is relatively agriculturally advanced, growing mainly cotton, millet and peanuts, and is one of the few oasis agricultural areas in Mauritania. The local climate is hot and dry due to the semi-arid climate of the Sahel, but the river provides the neighborhood with a source of irrigation water that supports the livelihood of the local population. Kaedi is also a node for Mauritania's border trade with Senegal due to its location, and the city, though small, serves an important regional agricultural and logistical function, serving as a window into the ecology and economy of southwestern Mauritania.
