The area is bordered by Yancheng District to the east and the Taiwan Strait to the west, and boasts an important harbor area for the Port of Kaohsiung, historically known for monuments such as the Dog Fighting British Consulate. Gushan District contains neighborhoods with colonial-era architectural features such as Harmasin and Whistling Ship's Head, as well as well-known landmarks such as Xiziwan Scenic Area and Sun Yat-sen University.
