Introduction to Sentema, Uganda

Sentema is a town in Wakiso District in central Uganda, about 30 kilometers west of the capital city of Kampala. It is part of Uganda's Central Region, adjacent to Mpigi District, and is located in the tropics near the equator, at an altitude of about 1,200 meters above sea level, with a mild and rainy climate.

Geographical and demographic characteristics

Sentema has a predominantly hilly terrain, surrounded by farmland and scattered villages, with a predominantly Bantu-speaking Ganda population engaged in subsistence agriculture and small-scale trade. The area retains its traditional Ugandan rural character, but in recent years has been affected by urbanization due to its proximity to Kampala.

Economy and Transportation

The economy is based on agriculture, with bananas, cassava, beans and coffee being the main crops. It is connected to the capital via the Kampala-Mpigi road and motorcycles and buses are the main means of transportation. Some residents commute to Kampala for work, and traditional crafts such as hand weaving and pottery remain.

Traditional Ugandan practices, such as drumming and dancing and the passing on of folktales, continue in Centema. The community is tightly knit, with most residents practicing Christianity or Islam. There is a lack of major infrastructure, but there is a basic health post and elementary school, and some areas are gradually being connected to the electricity grid.
