Sanyuan District is located in the west-central part of Fujian Province, China. It is the core city district of Sanming City, not an independent country or city. Its name is derived from the Tang Dynasty name "Sanyuan", which means "heaven, earth and water" in harmony with the three elements. With a total area of about 811 square kilometers and a population of about 400,000, the area is located in the transition zone between the Wuyi Mountains and the Daiyun Mountains, with the Shaxi River flowing through the urban area, a forest coverage of over 70% and a predominantly subtropical monsoon climate.
Sanyuan District, historically an important transportation hub in central Fujian, is now the political, economic and cultural center of Sanming City. Industry is dominated by iron and steel, machinery manufacturing and chemicals, and the key enterprise of Fujian Province, Sansteel Group, is located here. Meanwhile, Sanyuan is rich in ecological resources, with natural landscapes such as the Ge's Castanopsis Nature Reserve, and retains the Hakka culture and traditional customs of Minzhong, such as dragon boat races and Hakka mountain songs. The transportation is convenient, with the Yingxia Railway and Changshen Expressway running through the whole area, connecting the coastal and inland areas of Fujian.
