Located in the southeastern part of the Dominican Republic, San Pedro de Macorís is an important port city in the country and the capital of the province of San Pedro de Macorís. Located on the Caribbean coast, about 70 kilometers from the capital city of Santo Domingo, the city is known as the "Pearl of the Orient" and the "Cradle of Baseball of the World" due to its sugar cane industry and baseball tradition.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, San Pedro de Macorís prospered in the sugar cane and sugar industry, attracting a large number of immigrants and creating a unique blend of cultures. Today, the economy is diversified with chemical and pharmaceutical industries and is an important sugar export port in the Caribbean.
