San Mateo is located in the central part of the San Francisco Bay Area in the U.S. state of California and is the county seat of San Mateo County. The city is bordered by San Francisco to the north and the core of Silicon Valley to the south, with a total area of approximately 41.3 square kilometers and a resident population of approximately 100,000 people. As an important commercial and residential center in the Bay Area, San Mateo is known for its multicultural community and high quality school district.
Located on the coastal plain of the Peninsula, about 5 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, San Mateo has a Mediterranean climate with cool, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The city has several parks and trail systems, such as Coyote Lake and Laurelwood Park, which provide residents with an abundance of outdoor recreational space.
The city's economy is anchored by the technology, financial and healthcare industries, which have attracted companies such as Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rakuten to set up headquarters. Downtown San Mateo is home to a large number of retail and dining establishments, as well as one of the largest Japanese cultural centers in the Bay Area, reflecting its significant Asian cultural influence.
Transportation is provided by Interstate 101 and the Carlstadt Railroad, which runs north and south, and the San Francisco International Airport is only 15 minutes away. Educational resources include the nationally ranked San Mateo High School series of campuses, as well as the adjoining College of San Mateo, forming a comprehensive education system.
Same, the capital of Timor-Leste's Ainaro District, is located about 50 kilometers south of the capital, Dili, in the mountainous interior and is an important agricultural and transportation hub for the country. It is known for its coffee farming, surrounded by terraced fields that produce Timor-Leste's premium Arabica coffee beans. Historically, Samu was an important stronghold during Timor-Leste's War of Independence, and remnants of the resistance movement still remain in the area, attracting history buffs to explore. The surrounding area is rich in natural beauty and close to Mount Ramelau, Timor-Leste's highest peak, making it a stopover for hiking enthusiasts.
