Vilkaviškis is a city in southwestern Lithuania, located in Marijampol County, near the Polish border. The city has a long history, first documented in the 13th century, and was an important center of trade and crafts. Its name is derived from the Lithuanian word for "wolf's head", which is related to an old local legend.
As a regional economic center, Vilkaviškis is focused on food processing, timber industry and agriculture. The city is located along the European International Highway E67 (Vilnius-Warsaw), and the railroad connects Lithuania's major cities, making it an important hub for Lithuania's trade with Poland, Germany and other European countries.
Vilkaviškis retains historical buildings such as the neo-baroque Holy Trinity Church and the ruins of a 19th century synagogue. The "Vilkaviškis City Day", held every summer, showcases Lithuanian folk culture through traditional music and craft fairs, attracting many tourists to experience the unique border town atmosphere.
