Taraz is the capital of the Jambul Oblast of Kazakhstan, located in the south of the country on the banks of the Taras River, near the border with Kyrgyzstan. The city has a long history, dating back more than 2,000 years to the days of the ancient Silk Road, and was once known as "Taraz", an important trade and cultural center in Central Asia.
The economy of modern Taraz, with a population of about 350,000, is based on light industry, agriculture and food processing, producing machinery and equipment, construction materials and textiles. The city retains a number of historical monuments, such as the Mausoleum of Karakhan and the Mausoleum of Aisha-Bibi, which exhibit 11th- and 12th-century Islamic architecture and are listed on the UNESCO Tentative List.
With its continental climate, hot and dry summers and cold winters, Taraz is an important destination for exploring Kazakhstan's history and Silk Road heritage.
