Al Khums is a port city on the Mediterranean coast of northwestern Libya, belonging to the province of Murzoug, about 100 kilometers from the capital city of Tripoli. The city is situated in the western side of the Green Mountains region and has a typical Mediterranean climate with dry and hot summers and mild and rainy winters.
The region of Homs has a long history, and the archaeological site of the Roman city of "Reptis Major", a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains in the vicinity. Modern Homs emerged in the 20th century with the construction of a port and the development of the oil industry, and became an important industrial and trade hub for Libya.
As one of Libya's major fishing and commercial ports, Homs' economy is based on oil transportation, fish processing and agricultural trade. The city has a large oil refinery and chemical plant, and the surrounding agricultural area is rich in olive and grain crops. The city of Homs stretches along the coastline and retains an urban style that blends traditional Arab architecture with modern facilities.
