Founded in 1958, the city grew out of the rich deposits of potash nearby, and is an important producer of potash in Belarus, with large potash mining companies such as Belarusian Potash Company (Belaruskali). The city's economy is centered on the potash industry, with related industries driving employment and infrastructure development. Despite its industrial character, Soligorsk is surrounded by a beautiful natural environment with forests, lakes and recreational areas, as well as good amenities for its residents.
