San José is the capital of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, located in the northwestern part of the island, and is the political, economic and cultural center of the country. The city was founded in 1592 by Spanish colonists under the name of San José de Oroña, which was later shortened to its current name.
As one of the oldest cities in Trinidad and Tobago, St. Joseph retains a large number of colonial buildings such as the St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Presidential Palace.
