Shengei is an important district in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone, located in the southern foothills of the Guinea Plateau, adjacent to the Guinean border, with a savannah climate and distinct wet and dry seasons. The local economy is dominated by agriculture, producing rice, palm oil and groundnuts, making it one of Sierra Leone's "breadbaskets"; part of the area contains diamond mines, and the mining industry provides local employment opportunities. The population is dominated by the Temne and Limba ethnic groups, and there is a strong culture of traditional handicraft weaving and folk dancing, with the annual harvest festival held during the dry season being an important folklore event.
