As a country in Central Europe, Poland is home to a number of cities that combine history and modernity. Warsaw, the capital, is the political and economic center of the country, with its post-World War II reconstruction and modern skyscrapers, and the Wisła River running through the city, giving it a unique charm. Kraków is a cultural capital, with its medieval Old Town listed as a World Heritage Site, Wawel Castle and Jagiellonian University bearing witness to Poland's glorious history, and a hotbed of art and music. The northern port city of Gdańsk is known as the birthplace of the Solidarity trade union movement, with its Gothic red-brick churches and Baltic Sea views. In addition, Wrocław's Centennial Hall and Poznań's Gothic Cathedral each have their own distinctive character, together outlining Poland's diverse urban landscape.
Papeete is the capital and largest city of French Polynesia, located on the northwest coast of Tahiti in the Society Islands of the South Pacific. As the political, economic and cultural center of the overseas territory, Papeete has a population of approximately 26,000 and blends Polynesian traditions with French colonial flair. The city boasts a busy harbor, the Plaza de la Vinaite, and the Papeete Market, known for its sale of black pearls, handicrafts, and tropical fruits. Visitors can visit the Robert Wan Pearl Museum to learn about the history of local pearl farming or head to nearby beaches to experience diving, surfing and other water activities. Papeete International Airport is the main gateway to Tahiti, and its tropical oceanic climate is ideal for year-round travel.
