Ruby is a small incorporated town in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States, located about 60 miles northeast of the state capital of Baton Rouge and adjacent to the Mississippi border, and characterized by a quiet rural atmosphere and a deep community culture. Sparsely populated, with fewer than 500 people according to the most recent census, the town dates back to the late 1800s and, with its early rise to an agricultural economy (e.g., cotton and soybean farming), still retains the rustic look of a traditional Southern town. The town's landmarks include a century-old community church and several Victorian-style homes, and the annual fall "Ruby Family Day," which blends elements of local Cajun and Creole culture, has become a shared memory for the surrounding residents. Despite its small size, Ruby epitomizes the serenity of the American countryside with its simple folk and distinctive Louisiana southern flavor.
Moyamba is the second largest city in the West African country of Sierra Leone, located about 180 kilometers east of the capital, Freetown, and serves as the administrative center and a major economic hub for the Moyamba District. The city is situated along the railroad line and has historically been an important transportation and trade node.
Moyamba's economy is dominated by agriculture and mining, with the surrounding area producing palm oil, cocoa and coffee, as well as being an important area for diamond mining. The city has a vibrant market and small and medium-sized processing enterprises, and is one of Sierra Leone's inland distribution centers for agricultural products.
As a multi-ethnic city, Moyamba has a blend of Mende and Temne ethnic cultures and retains traditional festivals and crafts. The city's infrastructure is relatively simple, but health and education have improved in recent years, with a regional hospital and a vocational and technical school.
Moyamba is connected to Freetown and neighboring Guinea by road and rail, and is surrounded by hilly and rainforested landscapes. The city's climate is tropical and monsoonal, with abundant rainfall during the rainy season (May-October) and relatively cool and dry during the dry season.
