The Solomon Islands is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean, consisting of nearly 1,000 volcanic islands and coral atolls, located east of Papua New Guinea. The country's capital is Honiara, located on the largest island of Guadalcanal. As a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, its official language is English and its population of about 720,000 is predominantly Melanesian.
The archipelago is known for its tropical rainforests, volcanic landscapes and World War II historical sites. It has one of the largest coral reef systems in the world and an extremely high marine biodiversity. The local traditional culture remains intact, and the term "soft cow" is a misnomer that may refer to specialties such as coconut crabs or handmade wood carvings, which are abundant in the islands. The economy is based on agriculture, fishing and tourism.
