As a major industrial and economic center of South Africa, the city is known for its mining and manufacturing industries, especially for its historically rich gold resources.
Roodepoort was founded in 1889 and derives its name from the Dutch word for "quiet land". With the discovery of the Witwatersrand gold belt, the city quickly became a mining town.
